What Makes the Dyson Airsmooth Different?

  • It is Dyson's first dedicated dryer brush. It is built for one job, wet-to-dry drying and smoothing, rather than multi-attachment styling.
  • The head is a teardrop shape, not round. Dyson's global ambassador, hairstylist Collins, told Byrdie that a round brush lets hair "glide too quickly and lose the perfect tension."
  • It uses a patented dual bristle system, which Dyson says is designed to "guide hair, not fight it."

Technology and Design

  • Bristles: According to Dyson, the looped Anti-snag bristles collapse to release strands, which reduces snagging. The PivotFlex bristles have an open base that diffuses airflow. They flex up to 90 degrees, which the brand says helps limit frizz.
  • Heat control: Dyson says its intelligent heat control measures temperature 100 times a second. The brand claims this gives faster drying, less breakage and less frizz.
  • Format: The brush weighs 580g with the motor in the handle and runs on universal voltage, so it works when travelling. Dyson describes it as engineered for straight, wavy, curly and coily hair.
  • Pairing: Dyson pairs the brush with its Dyson Omega leave-in conditioning spray. This is an 8-in-1 spray made with seven omega-rich oils.

Dyson Airsmooth vs Airwrap

Al.com says the Airsmooth's oversized teardrop head reaches closer to the roots and covers more hair than the Airwrap's round volumising brush attachment. It also lacks the Airwrap's curling technology.

Al.com's view is that the Airsmooth suits people who mainly use the Airwrap round brush. Airwrap users who rely on the curling barrels get more versatility from the multi-styler. Collins told Byrdie the Airsmooth could be an extra tool for Airwrap owners, either as prep before curling or flat-ironing or as a standalone blowout tool.

How to Use It

Collins recommends starting with wet hair, using more moisture for more textured hair. He suggests working in larger sections than usual, often 12 or fewer per head. Al.com notes the brush can also be used on dry hair for touch-ups.
