What's New

Thornapple is named after the Datura plant, also called thornapple. The plant has night-blooming white trumpet flowers and spiny, egg-sized seed pods. Heretic states that the fragrance does not contain physical Datura stramonium and contains no poison. The brand calls the scent an interpretation of the plant's folklore and mythology, not a literal portrait of it.

Douglas Little explains the idea on the product page: "I've always thought of poisonous plants as the punk rockers of the botanical world."

The Notes

Heretic gives Thornapple's pyramid three themed tiers:

  • Top (The Temptation): apple accord, green leaves, cardamom, saffron
  • Heart (The Delirium): black tea, dark plum, labdanum, frankincense
  • Base (The Spell): oakmoss, vetiver, ambered woods, skin musk

According to the brand, each note plays a role:

  • Saffron adds "tension" under the opening.
  • Black tea brings depth and ambiguity.
  • Labdanum gives a resinous, ritualistic character.
  • Oakmoss and vetiver evoke the earth beneath the plant's roots.
  • Skin musk is the final stage, which Heretic says makes the scent feel personal to the wearer.

Bottle and Packaging

The 50ml bottle has a spiky black cap shaped like Datura's armoured seed pod. Its glass shades from black to yellow-green. The 50ml box carries a botanical Datura print, and the 5ml sample comes in a book-style box.

Key Details

Heretic says Thornapple is made from 95% naturally derived ingredients, as defined by ISO 9235. The brand also describes the formula as:

  • Free of phthalates, parabens, synthetic dyes and formaldehyde
  • Vegan-friendly
  • Cruelty-free

How to Wear It

Heretic says its plant-based fragrances wear light and sheer. The brand gives this guidance:

  • Reapply periodically through the day to extend wear.
  • Layer two to three Heretic scents to build intensity.
  • When layering, apply the heavier fragrance first, then the lighter one.

Heretic only accepts returns for defective or damaged products. The brand suggests starting with a sample, which makes the $28.00 5ml size the lower-commitment option.
